Hiking and Biking Map Hiking and Biking map of Madison County - This is a comprehensive map, you can zoom in and out. It shows the Appalachian Trail which has two access points close to Cabins of Madison County. Ski Wolf Laurel - Call for information toll free: 800-817-4111. Skiing at Wolf Laurel Ski Resort and Cataloochee Ski area in Maggie Valley. White Water Rafting The first four places are very close to each other on 25/70. All the owners are super friendly professional and very helpful. You will have an awesome time! Blue Heron Whitewater Rafting - This outfit just moved to a new location on the corner of 25/70 & Little Pine. Very nice facility plus a gift shop! Mountain Adventure Guides - 1-866-USA-RAFT. Located on 25/70 just after you pass Marshall. Nantahalla Outdoor Center - 1-888-905-7238 Great rafting outfit and a very nice facility! They have a Rafting Guide School also. French Broad Rafting Expeditions - Located at 9800 Highway 25/70 Marshall, NC 28753 1-800-570-RAFT (7238). If you're coming to us from Asheville or Charlotte you'll be passing this location. Call 877-520-4658 or 828-622-9645. ![]() White Water Rafting on the French Broad River Horseback Riding and Llama Trekking Sandy Bottom Trail Rides - Located near the town of Marshall NC, this outfit has their own garnet stream. And the views are some of the best in Madison County! They're open year round, weather permitting. You will love the experience! Call them toll free at 800-959-3513. Wolf Laurel Stables - They offer some of the most scenic, guided horseback trail and wagon rides in the Asheville North Carolina area. Located on the East side of I-26. 828-678-9370. English Mountain Llama Trekking - You will love your Llama trekking at Max Patch! 828-622-9686. The Biltmore Estate - The Biltmore also offers one hour trail rides and carriage rides with a regular estate admission ticket. Riding the Biltmore grounds is fantastic, but these rides are extremely supervised, nose to tail only. They are open year round, depending on the weather. 800-624-1575. Hot Air Balloon Rides R. O. Franks Hot Air Balloon Company - Call them at 828-242-5275. Awesome Hot Air Balloon Rides, and what an amazingly romantic way to see Asheville and the surrounding mountains from above!!! North Carolina Balloons - Call them at 1-800-260-2028. They launch from Canton, NC, about an hour and 15 minutes from Cabins of Madison County. Fly Fishing at Cabins of Madison County Cabins of Madison County is set right on the banks of Shelton Laurel River, premier fly fishing stream! You can fly fish just few feet from your cabin's front porch. If you don't have a fishing license C&H Fishing Supplies few minutes away in Hot Springs, NC will set you up with one. You can fly fish for trout in a stocked trout stream just a few steps from your North Carolina Mountain Cabin. Hiking in Western North Carolina Appalachian Trail - The public access to the trail is at the end of Gorenflo Gap Rd. From the town of Hot Springs go South on hwy 209 for about 6.5 miles, turn right on Gorenflo Gap Road. Go 1.5 miles to the end of the Gorenflo Gap Road. AT access is right there at the end of the road. ![]() Hiking at Max Patch Shelton Laurel Back Country - This is an absolutely gorgeous trail, and closest trail to us, 5 minutes! We just hiked it and had a blast! You walk along a beautiful and very picturesque mountain stream. Super clean trail. Easy slight rise as you go in, coming back is even easier, downhill. As far as romantic walks along the creek go, you really want to do this one! From Cabins of Madison County, left on hwy 212, go 1.5 miles to NC 1310 (also Hickey Fork Road). Make a left and go 1 mile until you see parking area on your right. Laurel River Trail - 3.6 miles long. Begins near the at hwy 208 and 25/70 on a dirt road that turns into the trail. You'll be passing that corner on your way to Cabins of Madison County if you're coming up from Marshall and the South. It's a single track along an old railroad grade to the ghost town of Runion, where the Laurel River runs into the French Broad River. Easy hiking and a popular trail along the river. River Ridge Loop Trail - 1.3 mile loop. A moderate loop that climbs through a pine forest for a bird's-eye view of the French Broad River and the surrounding valley. The trail begins across from the Murray Branch Picnic Area. ![]() You might make a few friends along your hiking journey in Western North Carolina Mountains. Murray Branch Picnic Area - The Murray Branch Recreation Area is located 6 miles from Hot Springs down the French Broad River. The area offers picnicking, fishing, and canoe access to the river. Facilities at Murray Branch, under the shade of pine trees, include picnic tables, grills, restrooms, water, and two picnic shelters for larger parties. Jack Branch Trail - This is a steep, difficult trail that goes up to 2900 feet. There are good views of Hot Springs and the French Broad River. The trail begins on The River Ridge Loop crosses The Polecat Hollow Road and ends up at The Shad Road. Rocky Bluff Campground and Hiking Trails - Located about 3 miles south of Hot Springs, Rocky Bluff has a beautiful walking trail which follows Spring Creek, as well as the Vann Cliff trail. Look out for signs of beaver activity.Dupont State Forest - Located South of Asheville, NC this is a gorgeous forest with a lot of trails for mountain biking and hiking. (828) 622-3202 Max Patch Bald - Amazing hike! If you only have time for one, do this one. You'll be hiking at elevation of 4692 feet. From Hot Springs take hwy 209 to right on Meadow Fork Road, right on Little Creek, and right onto Max Patch Road. Unbelievable panoramic 360 views just half mile from parking lot. Lots of wildflowers along the trail during the warmer months. Max Patch can also be a starting point for the Appalachian Trail North towards Hot Springs or South towards the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Mountain Biking Bluff Mountain Outfitters - Great place, two floors of outdoor gear with good prices! They even have a pinball machine! Restaurants There is such an amazing selection of restaurants in the area that it's impossible to list them all. These are some local favorites located in Hot Springs, Marshall and Asheville. The Iron Horse Station - This place is Brand New! Casual fare and drinks, located in the lovely historic downtown Hot Springs. Open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week with a tavern, coffeehouse, antiques, local artisans, big screen TV and FREE Wi-fi. 828-622-0022. The Mountain Magnolia - Very romantic setting and amazing food. Great fillet mignon. Open for dinner only. Please call for hours. 828-622-3543. Rock Bottom - Located right on a creek with a pretty terrace, this place is a local favorite. Great beer and wine selection and casual food. Always a lively and interesting place. Open Noon till late night 7 days a week. 828-622-0001. Sweet Imaginations Ice Cream Cafe - Great lunch, snacks and dinner choices. Must try their desserts! Call for hours. 828-622-7522. The Camp Store - Located across from The Hot Springs Spa, great selection of beer and wine. Pick up some champagne to enjoy during the soak in the hot tubs!!! 828-622-7267. The Smoky Mountain Diner - Breakfast, lunch, and early dinner. Good country fried steak or chicken caesar salad. Open 365 days, but try to get in early, they close by 7PM. 828-622-7571. Asiana Grand Buffet - This place has an amazing selection of Sushi and Chinese food. Endless buffet including Sushi. Been there several times and loved it. Grits Country Cafe - Located on hwy 209 in the old school with stone walls on 209. It's now the Spring Creek Community center. It's about 13 miles south of Hot Springs. Very scentic ride! 828-622-3777. Spring Creek Cafe - At the corner of 209 and 63 about 15 miles south of Hot Springs, The Spring Creek Cafe has reopened with a diverse menu and long hours. Next door there's a Trust General Store the features a nice grocery store, fishing supplies and gas. This is a bit of a ride 30-40 minutes from Cabins of Madison County, but it's a very beautiful ride with scenic overlooks along 209. 828-622-7400. CiCi's Pizza - Cheap, quick, and hot all-you-can-eat pizza across the street from the Asheville Mall. 148 S. Tunnel Road Asheville, NC. 828-298-0010. Zuma Coffee Shop - Located in the middle of Historic Downtown Marshall NC, this place has become somewhat of a "town center", and is known as "Marshall's meeting place".
